Pitoni, teschi conservati e cerimonie Voodoo mi portano in Togo e Benin, luoghi di nascita del Voodoo. Queste credenze prendono spunto da molte religioni antiche ormai scomparse e mantengono vivo un collegamento con gli antenati in Africa occidentale. Il confine polveroso tra Togo e Benin funziona anche come mercato offrendo una pletora di oggetti dalla frutta fresca a ukulele in plastica. Una volta arrivato a Lomè, la capitale del Togo, è d’obbligo una visita al mercato dei feticci, “Marche’ des Feticheurs” che propone una vasta scelta di oggetti per le cerimonie voodoo. Teste di scimmia, di cani, di elefanti, di antilopi o capre sono appoggiate a terra o su scaffali di legno e conservano ancora un odore di carne putrida. Un sacerdote  dei feticci, un “Voodoonou”, spiega che ogni animale è morto per cause naturali e poi trattato per essere conservato. E ogni animale è usato per una specifica cerimonia, come per esempio le ossa di elefante tritate che curano l’elefantiasi, una malattia endemica in Africa che provoca un ispessimento della pelle. Ma nessun oggetto possiede alcun potere curativo se prima non viene benedetto da un Voodoonou. Il sacerdote spiega che “la maggior parte del Voodoo è magia bianca, che raccoglie gli spiriti buoni degli antenati. Gli spiriti buoni sono sempre  più forti di quelli cattivi”
