Malta, la dolce


I Greci la chiamarono Melitē, che significa “dolce” nell’821 a.C. e gli Arabi Malita. Venne così chiamata dai Greci per la sua quantità di api autoctone che producevano in abbondanza miele. Secondo un’altra ipotesi, la parola “Malta” potrebbe invece derivare dall’antica parola della lingua fenicia “malit”, che letteralmente significa “montagna”. L’isola è parte di un arcipelago situato nel cuore del mar Mediterraneo. Solo le tre maggiori isole, ovvero Malta, Gozo e Comino sono abitate. Il territorio di Malta emerge dalla piattaforma continentale sottomarina sicula un ponte che collegava la Sicilia e il Nord Africa eroso durante l’ultima età del ghiaccio.
