Tenerife e Gran Canaria, Isole Canarie, Spagna


Le isole Canarie si allungano nell’Oceano Atlantico circa 100 chilometri a ovest delle coste sud del Marocco. Un arcipelago formato da sette isole principali che, pur essendo spagnole, sembra avere più in comune con i Caraibi grazie allo stile di vita rilassato e a spiagge esotiche. Molte delle isole sono state nominate Riserva Biosfera dell’UNESCO grazie alle loro strutture vulcaniche e parchi nazionali. Tenerife non è un’isola divisa in due ma piuttosto formata da due isole.  Ci sono zone destinate ai resort sulle spiagge, come a Playa Las Americas e Costa Adeje e poi c’è il resto dell’isola, la parte più grande dove i Canari hanno vissuto per secoli. Quello che Tenerife offre è la diversità. E’ grande abbastanza da avere città cosmopolite con centri storici, città movimentate, piccoli villaggi, zone rurali e enormi spazi compresi in Parchi Nazionali dove si può camminare per ore e non incontrare nessuno. Ma Tenerife è anche la terra che ospita il picco più alto di Spagna, ed il terzo vulcano più alto del mondo, il Teide, la cui forma imponente accoglie i visitatori che arrivano dal cielo. E naturalmente spiagge per tutti i gusti. Gran Canaria soffre della stessa immagine di Tenerife come poco più che una destinazione di turismo di massa. In realtà, come per Tenerife, le parti più interessanti da scoprire e visitare si trovano fuori dalle zone turistiche di massa. Ironicamente le due isole hanno una personalità molto simile nonostante la fiera rivalità che le separa. La gente a cui piace Tenerife dovrebbe piacere anche Gran Canaria sebben vi siano delle differenze. Di forma circolare, Gran Canaria sembra essere un pezzo staccatosi dalle coste africane 150 km più a est. La terza isola più grande dell’arcipelago, dopo Tenerife e Fuerteventura, ha grosso modo la stessa grandezza di Londra. Fu scoperta nel 999 AC, quando il navigatore arabo Ibn Farrukh, all’epoca di stanza in Andalusia, toccò terra per la prima volta, introducendo pure la coltivazione dell’aloe vera. Tuttavia prima che gli Spagnoli arrivassero nel 15mo secolo, i Canari già occupavano l’isola. Discendenti dai Berberi, questa gente non aveva nessuna conoscenza di navigazione cosa che ha lasciato supporre agli storici che fossero schiavi portati sulle isole. La capitale è Las Palmas di Gran Canaria nel Nord Est. Fu fondata da Juan Rejón un capitano aragonese il 24 Giugno 1478. E’ cresciuta fino ad arrivare ad essere la nona città di Spagna e la più grande delle Canarie con una popolazione di 400.000 persone. Seguendo i passi di Juan Rejón arriva nell’isola il più famoso Cristoforo Colombo nel 1492 per un pit stop sulle sue caravelle proprio nel Porto de la Luz di Las Palmas. Passa i suoi giorni sull’isola nella zone di Vegueta, il centro storico della città, alla casa di Colon, la residenza del Governatore Spagnolo. Sebbene non particolarmente famosa per l’architettura, Gran Canaria ha alcuni edifici notevoli. La Cattedrale di Las Palmas, per esempio, è stata completata in 400 anni e si può godere di una bella vista dalla sommità del suo campanile. D’altra parte a Maspalomas, nel sud dell’isola, esistono delle dune sabbiose spettacolari sullo stile del Sahara e che finiscono direttamente in mare. Alcuni hanno ipotizzato che potrebbero essere state formate da uno tsunami partito da Lisbona nel 1755. Le spiagge rappresentano più di un quarto delle 147 miglia di costa. A nord, però, la costa è per lo più scoscesa e impraticabile
